Ok, this post could actually be hours long. Isaac had so many different sides to him its really hard encapsulate his career into one post. I added songs he wrote / produced, popular samples, some of his smooth instrumentals, and just some of my personal favs. On a personal note, I spoke to Isaac hayes for a brief moment way back when I had my web radio station. I was being interviewed (about the station) by blackplanet.com while he was being interviewed for his cook book he had just released. We talked on the phone for about a min or so. I asked about the book and then I asked him what he thought of internet radio (it was kinda a new thing back then). After we finished, I couldnt believe I actually spoke to THE BLACK MOSES. Hes going to really be missed. We lost a major icon and one of the most unique, multi talented musicians of an era.

Q-Tip's "Getting Up" just happens to use a sample from the Black Ivory cut I mentioned a few weeks ago "You and I". Mark Ronson produced the track. Its cool, but honestly I thought Madlib flipped it better. You decide. Glad to see Q-Tip putting out some new stuff tho. Listen to the track here
Boy, this one was hard to take. Multi talented Isaac Hayes passed away yesterday. Im honestly trying to think of what to say about him and I really dont know where to start. Maybe in a few days I will put together a proper tribute of some of my faves. until then, Here he is with the remake to the Burt Bacharach classic Walk on By. He kills it. Of course biggie sampled it for Warning.
When I found this sample, I couldnt stop playing it. I added the Common track that Kanye used this sample on at the front of the track. Don Convay really does his thing on this one... Its so gritty. I like that. Don Convay with "theres a will theres a way" sampled by Kanye for Common's for "Southside" from the Finding Forever album.
Some classic hiphop sampled from the past post. Schoolboy crush was sampled by Eric B and Rakim for Microphone Fiend and Too Short for Life is. Think Twice was sampled by Main Source for Looking out the front door and A Tribe Called Quest for Footprints.
And its 2 songs thats been sampled by 4 different artists. Well, actually both songs have been sampled more than that but these four are the ones I picked haha. Anyway, here is the The Average White Band with School Boy Crush and Donald Byrd with Think Twice. I'll post up the samples in a few days.
This is a post Ive been wanting to do for a while now...
Its funny that everyone is all over Amy Winehouse and the other Amy Winehouse clones out there. Now dont get me wrong, I rather enjoyed her album. But lets face it, she is a D class Etta James at best. No disrespect. So I thought I would play a little Etta James in the hopes that some of these hipster, wanna be cool, boppers, will appreciate an original. So first we have Etta James with "Id rather be blind", followed by Duffy (another Amy) with Warwick Ave., followed by Amy herself with Back to Black. Enjoy
I was watching tv and UPS (I think it was UPS) has an ad with this Stevie Wonder cut from Innervisions. So as always I had to do a post. I tried to find the commercial but didnt see it out there so keep an eye out for it. Its a horrible, generic remake but you will recognize the course. By the way, I get a lot of emails looking for older posts. Most of my older posts can be found in the archive at http://kgrayson.podomatic.com/archive
Bo Diddley passes away. REST IN PEACE. Everyone from Buddy Holly and the Stones to Johnny Thunders and, er the Dead have paid tribute to the master with covers, interpretations and outright swipes. Blues, R&B, Reggae and all-out rock 'n' roll songs pepper his massive catalog.
IM almost 3 years into this thing and I just realized I have never posted anything from Weldon Irvine. I woke up this morning... having had a little too much fun lastnight. Dug around in my music collection for something to get me going. Had to be something mellow... this is what I dug up. "Morning Sunshine"
