Ive mentioned madlib many times on this podcast. one of my fav producers of all time. Creative, unique, varied... he makes his own way and I appreciate that. Amazing how his music is soooo different from the current hiphop / snap/ lil crap thats out now. But I wont start that conversation up again.... Alright Ive been wanting to do this post for a while now... Gloria Jones records Tainted Love for motown. Years later, SoftCell re interprets Tainted Love and its huge. Many people re recored it afterwards including Marilyn Manson, The Pussycat Dolls etc... and even Levis uses it in a popular commercial. Not too long ago, Rihanna sampled the the Softcell version for her song SOS. Peep the progression...

So my wife was watching Dancing with the Stars the other day. Im in the other room. All of a sudden, one of my favorite songs comes on. Its probably one of the more well know Brazilian jazz songs. Mas Que Nada by Sergio Mendes. This is 100 times better than anything Soulja Slim (I HATE THAT DAMN SUPER MAN CRAP), or any of the "youngs" or "littles" could ever come up with. So I overheard these highschool aged girls talking about music. And the conversation turned to lloyd's "You". They went on and on about how they loved that song. I wondered if they knew it was sampled. Of course not lol. But I have to admit, Ive been telling everyone it was a sample from the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced "Human League". This was wrong. The group was actually "Spandau Ballet". The song is called "True". I know you all have heard lloyds version but just in case here is the video. I guess Im on a post some of my favorite videos stream this week. If you are reading this via your RSS reader, hit the site up to see these vids (http://kgrayson.podomatic.com). Last time it was Madlib’s Come on feet. This week Im takin it to one of my favorite hiphop artists of all time. Ghostface killa and his video for Daytona 500. First of all, I used to love speed racer. And to combine Speed Racer with Ghost was a crazy idea. As I understand it Ghost was in Jail and could not shoot a video so they opted for the cartoon. Anyway. Listen to the sample first the watch the video. Rza does it again. Great use of a sample. Bob James is one of those cats that have been sampled hundreds of times (Nautilus has been sampled a lot too). And if you listen to a few of his albums you’ll soon see why. Nautilus is taken from this album. Also be sure to check Ghosts debut solo album which has this track. One of the most slept on HIPHOP albums of all time.

Another one of my favs. Crazy video, crazy use of a sample, just plain creative. Anyway the sample is from Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, the first ever blacksplotation movie but Melvin Van Peebles. I think Madlib is one of the most creative cats out there right now. From the Lord Quas stuff, YNQ, etc... he always does things his way. Anyway, listen to the sample first, the watch the video... How does he come up with this stuff? Also, another thing that I like about Madlib is that he is not caught up on having all this really costly equipment. Equipment and tools do not make you a great producer. He has a very basic set up and yet he continues to always make great music.

Man, musiclovr.com has really been put through its paces today. Thanks to everyone that has checked it out. I hope it continues to be a useful tool to help everyone discover new music. Here are just a few resons how musiclovr.com is useful... if you are tired of listening to the same ol music, simply search for an artist that you like. Once the artists main pages comes up, view some of the names of other artists people are listening to at the bottom. You will almost always find someone you like. You need to buy a gift for a friend who loves music. You know they like The Roots for instance but you have no idea what albums or songs are the must haves. Well as I mentioned before there are a lot of peeps who sampled this but I was kinda feeling nostalgic (no surprise there right lol) so I up'ed this version. Other who sampled this song were Digable Planets (Nickle bags), Tone Loc (some song I cant remember right now), Dilated Peoples, DMX etc... Ice T sped it up a lot but I like his flow over it. Used to love the video too. Shot gun to the head at the end. Bad acting but I can forgive Ice T for that.

Made myself do a little mixing last night after doing some updates to the rice university site my company (giantmultimedia.com) is developing... check it out at grahamfootball.com anyway, It was good to do a little "mixin". Been so busy theres just been no time. Anyway while I was seaching for songs to throw in there, I came across this little jam from Curtis. Mary J. by means of Bad boy was a sample, remake queen, and still is. Anyway, as you all know I like to give a little props to the originals. So a good friend of mine was in town over the weekend. He and another good friend of mine got together at my house and we all got to talking about the usual topics, Music, religion, liqor, music etc... Anyway, the brand new heavies came up and I mentioned their new album. They have a remake of this stevie wonder song (I have been intending to put on the podcast but never got around to it). They do a decent job at it, but honestly I think Jill Scott did it right when they had the Stevie Wonder tribute on BET a few years ago. I do recommend you all check out the Brand New Heavies album. If you like them im sure you'll enjoy their latest offering. Compare their version of this song and the original. Id be interested to know what everyone thinks.

Well, as you know, they have been sampled a lot, but here is one that might be a little hard to guess. The song is called Sea of Tranquility, have you heard it before? In the mist of getting shot multiple times and buying spinning gold chains, they are listening to slow jams from Mr Gaye? Of course they, themselves had nothing to do with it really but I digress. They released a song called I wanna get to know you with Joe singing the hook. That hook and the sample they used for the song was taken from this little gem. of course many people have sampled from marvin gaye. One of hiphop's most unique love songs was inspired by Marvin. Method Man teamed up with Mary J Blige on the All I Need remix. Mary sang the lyrics from this song. Crazy how the two sound so different right? Marvin's version is so upbeat, with a driving drum beat, the Method Man version is dark and Mary's singing heavy. I always thought it was interesting how they twisted it. You're all I need to get by, taken from the album of the same name. Written by Ashford and Simpson way before they were know as a solo group (they have written some of the biggest hits for motown). Tammi Terrell (in photo with Marvin) sang on this track also. She and Marvin had a string of duet hits.

I sat here for about 5 minutes trying to think of how to start this post. Lets talk about this album first. Whats going on was recorded in 10 days, was almost never released because, at the time, Marvin was known as a sex symbol and not political, probably the best start to finish album ever created. I could go on and on... Whats Going On deals with the issues facing communities all over america. Low wages, crime, police brutality, un employment etc... Mind you it was released in 1971 (over 30 years ago) yet every word of Inner City Blues fits today. Listen to the words of the song. You could almost imagine he was talking about today.

Marvin Gaye Month

So Im watching TV the other night (well really I was kinda listening while I was doing some work) when I hear A Funky Space Reincarnation playing. It got my attention real quick. Turns out its on a Christian Dior commercial. Interesting song for a commercial. That song comes from the album Here My Dear, an album that Gaye had to fork over most of the proceeds to his ex wife. Now I would imagine, most people in that situation would not give their best, knowing that the ex is going to reap the profits but instead, Marvin put together an amazing album. The whole album is about their relationship and the problems they had. Its passionate and you can almost feel the pain. Ironically, when it was released, the album did poorly. Although it gained respect over time. Marvin Gaye's birthday was on the 2nd of this month and sadly, the aniversary of his death was on the 1st. I thought it might be fitting to post a few of Marvin's songs throughout the month. Here is the first. Its from the album Here My Dear and will give you a taste of what the album is all about. Ghost, releases Fishscale, and in my opinion, one of the best hiphop albums in recent time. Now, granted im a huge fan of Tony Starks so take it for what its worth. I can say that a lot of people agree with me. Quality production and of course Ghost's flow make for a great album start to finish. One other thing thats great about it is that there are a ton of samples in it. The one Im posting is from the Three Degrees. The song is called Maybe. No surprise because this was a difficult one. Actually its called an interpolation, which simply means it uses the same tones differently. Its more of an "influence" rather than a straight out sample. But its all the same. TI slowed it down some what and used synths instead of the horns (Tubas?) as in the original. Listen to it a few times and you'll hear it.

My memory is pretty odd. I cant remember what I had for dinner yesterday normally, but if I hear a sample, I can usually remember the song that was used. Sometimes it takes a while but eventually I'll remember. Thats what happend with this one. While watching TV, the song that samples this post came on. I knew the music sounded like something I had heard before but couldnt put my finger on it. After hearing the song a few times it finally hit me. This sample was taken from my main man Donny Hathaway from the Everything is Everything album. Now, the first few bars were sampled by Nate Dogg in his song "I Got Love" from a few years back. But it has also influenced a song out currently. The person sampling this song changed it slightly (used different instruments and adjusted the tempo) but its dead on. Well, Kanye does it again. This sample is from the Main Ingredient. A group mostly know for "Everybody plays the fool". This sample is taken from the album Shame on the World from 1975. On a side note, the lead singer of the group is Cuba Gooding Sr. Yes thats right, Father to the oscar winning Cuba Jr. The one thing I love about this song, besides the obvious sample is the lyrics. Yesterday, was the anniversary of the death of BIG. One of my favs in hiphop. Biggie's Ready to Die album was very sample heavy, and not the obvious, glossy sampling badboy is known for. Its more gritty, with classic soul breaks instead of the polished R&B samples. Ironically, this is a sample of the remix version to One More Chance, a polished R&B sample lol. (I am currently away from my collection and only had access to this track). Perhaps I will post some of the better soul samples later. I imagine this remix was done just so that Big could have another radio friendly song. This sample was taken from Debarge's Stay with me. The song is off the In a Special Way LP, which for that glossy, popish (some times over produced) R&B of the 80s, its one of the best. It had the other songs that made Debarge famous too, In a Special Way, Time Will Reveal & A Dream.

I almost hate to add this to the blog. It seems that I have posted more about the death of someone than music. But it would be wrong NOT to talk about a man who gave us (all of us) so much. Gordon Parks passed away this morning at the age of 93. Director, composer, writer, producer, photographer, poet. Many of the movies he directed, he would also write the score (although he was never classically trained). He was the first major black photographer to be published in Life and Vogue magazines. In addition to his music and photography, he was also an author, playwright, and poet. I was watching the news this morning and they showed an interview he did. In it he said that he was able to do so many different things simply because he tried. He went on to say that so many people only think about doing things and are often discouraged because it is not within their training or culturally acceptable. Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly is coming

Thats right, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly is coming to my humble little city in a few weeks. You bet Im going to be there. Maze was one of the first groups that really started to appreciate when I was younger. There was a record store here in Tulsa called Sound Warehouse. I was always in there, and knew a lot of the people. This was in the early 80s so most kids my age were looking for hiphop and the hot new R&B artists. So when I was coming in there looking for Music of my Mind or A Love Surpreme, I kinda stood out. But one of the first albums I was looking for was this one from Maze. Needless to say it wasnt too popular to play around my friends so I would listen to it at night with my headphones on lol. I would even hide the album jacket behind my other records so no one would see it. My uncle would play this song on his Reel to Reel (remember those) and since I looked up to him I had to have it too.

This one is probably a no brainer because the only change to this was the speed and drums. Another obvious sample since very little was done to it. Curtis Mayfield was probably one of the most talented soul singers/ producers to come out of his era. He had hits in the 60s with the Impressions, and in the 70s as a solo artist. He always had meaningful lyrics about pride, love, and the struggles of life. This sample was taken from another great soul album of the 70s. An album that has a clear message and can be played without skipping songs. How many albums can you say that about today? One more thing, study those drums! You have to remember this was done well before drum machines and the like. These drums are sick!

Hangin on a String, Loose Ends You know whats up, Donell Jones Golden, Jill Scott T plays it cool, Marvin Gaye (trouble man OST) I want you remix, Wajeed I think I love you, Dwele Star of the story, YamWho Wind Parade, Donald Byrd I want your love, James Mason I really enjoyed putting this mix together because its a blend of genres and times. Yet they all fit together smoothly. The "T Plays it Cool" song is from the Trouble Man OST from 1972 but those drums sound modern. I had to follow Marvin with the remix of "I want you". Then after a few songs I added the YamWho remake of Star of the Story. Some of ya'll have that Summer Slow Jams disk a made a few years ago, it had the original Heatwave version. Next , I put Wind Parade, one of my favorite Jazz cuts from one of my favorite artists. Lastly, James Masons "I want your love". I like the vibe and feel of this song and James Mason is another one of my faves. He played with Roy Ayres, and released one solo album called "Rhythm of Life". A huge album for collectors and just a great overall jazz record.

Like I said before, the Meters were sampled quite often but you really should give them a listen because they were just an all around great band.

Gene McFadden passed away this week and Coretta Scott King. Respect to everything they stood for in their lifetimes. Since this is a music blog, Im not going to talk about Mrs. King but understand that I am greatful for her contributions. Lets talk about McFadden. Part of the McFadden & Whitehead duo that is most known for "aint no stoppin us now", but they did a lot of production work also. Whitehead died a few years ago from a gun shot wound. Well this is one of the reasons I started this little blog because this type of stuff is not being talked about. I think its a sad commentary of the labels today and the big business behind them. You mean to tell me its ok to sample them but not acknowledge them when they pass? Its just down right sad. Yo man, music is much more then just some beats and bars. We cannot forget about those that gave us the basis for what we listen to today. OK, Im stepping down from my soap box now.

Heres another song from another classic album. Aretha with Day Dreaming. Some people say this is her best album. Its hard to say since she had so many great albums. I know I keep saying that "this is the best soul album" but I really feel that way about alot of these that Ive mentioned here in DE. There is so much great music out there. This song has been sample once or twice so you'll probably feel like your heard parts of it.

Valentines day is right around the corner. In honor of this day, Im going to submit some of my favorite songs about love thoughout the month. Some will be about the joy of love, others will be about the pain. Here is my first submission and its from Minnie Riperton. She had a very special voice (she had a five-octave range) and a unique sound. She passed away due to breast cancer at the age of 31 before the release of the album from which this song came from. Now many of you may expect me to play "Loving You", probably her biggest hit and that would have worked, but I want to present music that maybe you have not heard (or at least may have forgotten about). A few weeks ago I mentioned a sample from the Meters. Well here it is. It was produced by rich harrison, and I think it was one of the better songs last year and is a great example of why I admire creative production. I dont think I would have ever thought to grab this portion of this song. But those drums are crazy. Some people think the song that sampled this sound a lot like Beyoncé's crazy in love. Maybe its because its produced by the same cat. The Meters have been sampled over and over again by some of the biggest HIPHOP artists. Just a rock solid band. Well here it is... Well, after another long night shift at my second job (giantmultimedia.com), I started thinking about a little tradition I have. Its something near and dear to my heart. Anytime I skip work, I play this song. With no one else around I blast this song over the stereo. Its perfect. I do not own the rights to this little ritual of mine so feel free to do the same when you skip work. I think you will find it sets the mood. I havent decided yet if I will, in fact, skip but... lets just say its on my mind. As a side note, the album cover that I posted above is not the album this song came from but it is probably one of my favorite soul albums of all time. Begining to end.

I think of this as the mellow sunday afternoon mix. Even flow throughout. Nice and smooth... Rock the Boat - Aaliyah RIP Aaliyah. Come Around - Foreign Exchange Peep the album if you get a chance. Its not bad, but this song is my favorite. Its amazing that these guys recorded the album 100% over the internet. Never meeting face to face. I Got You - Platinum Pied Pipers F/ Tiombe Lockhart Detroit's own PPP with another hit. Always putting out good music. Triple P was one of the better albums of 2005 IMHO JDilla and SA-RA.... nuff said. Beautiful U R - Javier Decent album that got no love cause the label probably couldnt figure how to market it. You may have heard the song "crazy" on the radio or on BETs Midnight Love (which BTW is sad now. I think they have changed it to BET Late but the song selection is just awful. But then again I guess theres very little to choose from... but I digress...) Lay Me Down - Terry Dexter / will.i.am Yes Will.I.AM from the Black Eyed Peas produced this one. I like that beat and that weird echo on the vocals. Paradise (the Mighty Joe Young Remix) - Sade Just a little remix I put together. Ive always liked this song. I mean really, you cant go wrong with Sade. Shouts out to BIG SHAW for the intro bump. Anyone can do it, call me (206-339-7471) and leave a message and I will add you to the next mix. This sample comes from the one and only Willie Hutch. OK, This one should be obvious. Its played everyday in the radio. Should be instant once you hear it. Just a simple loop for the most part. Put your guesses in the comments BEFORE I give the answer in a few days lol. Willie Hutch died last year around September. I didnt see any mention of his passing in the news or even on BET. Im sure there was something but I missed it. Mr Hutch hammered out the hits for motown and many blaxsplotation movies such as The Mack and Foxy Brown. After his death I tried to complete my collection of his work. When I came across this one. Its from the album Fully Exposed. I think its one of the best samples of the year besides a certain drum break from the Meters... maybe I'll post up that one later.

Dont be fooled. You are being marketed to. Here is an interesting article on products and HIPHOP. In my opinion this is what is destroying hiphop. Dont think for one minute that these products are not paying for placement. They will never admit to it but at the end of the day, its all about the money right. Donny Hathaway's This Christmas. Remade over and over again and none of them even come close. I admit it, Im a music snob. I actually get a little angry when I hear remakes of some of my favorites. I start to look around for someone, anyone else who has that look of distaste on their grills but usually theres no one around thats feelin me (sometimes theres an old man in the corner ). lol. I dont complain to Kim anymore because she's tired of hearing me complain about music. Oh well... enjoy. BTW, The image posted above is of Donny's Greatest Hits album. Its a good entry point if you know nothing about my man Donny. Honestly, Extension Of A Man is a great one but Everything is Everything is probably one of the best soul albums ever put out.

Here is the playlist in order with some comments from The Mighty Joe Young... "No One is Going to Love you" - the Sounds of Success (better known as the SOS band). Classic Jam. Theres a remix of Maxwell's "Ascension" that sampled this (where is Maxwell BTW). One of my favs from the SOS band that doesnt get much play for some reason "Closer than Friends" - Surface "Only you can make me happy" - Surface Man, back in the day, Surface was my group. "Secret Rendezvous" - Rene and Angela Another one of those songs that cats dont play much. everyone plays their classics like "Wanna be Close", "My First Love" and "You dont have to cry". The beat in this is classic. *below starts the rollerskating portion of the mix lol "Rock With You" - Michael Jackson "Baby Be Mine" - Michael Jackson no explanation needed. I remember one Christmas that the only thing I had to have was the Thriller album (and I do mean Album).Who would have ever thought back then that he would end up like he has? "A Lovers Holiday" - Change This was a good album. Early Luther... Listen to the album "Glow of Love".. cant beat it for the 80s R&B sound. Known for their dance cuts but they got some slow jams on there too... "You cant run from my love" - Stephanie Mills Nice rollerskate cut. "Saturday Love" - Cherrelle ft Alexander Oneal Classic 80s. That cut always brings back good memories "Number One" - Patrice Rushen Just a nice vibe to it. Many people know her classics but there is sooo much more to Patrice, do some research. Super talented. and sampled / remade often. Musiq Soulchild had that interlude "Settle for my love" on his first album. He did a good job but the orig. is what you need to hear. "Nights over Egypt" - The Jones Girls Im always surprised that not many people have heard this one. I recently found out that when it was released, it didnt even break the top 20. Sampled by a few, most recently by Faith Evans.
