Im getting ready for the holiday weekend. I've been busting my tail lately wrapping up a few projects so its going to be really nice to have an extra day off. So with that in mind I thought Id post a nice, smooth, relaxing song. And who else to go to than the one and only Bob James! Now most of you will probably remember this as the theme to Taxi. But few people realize it was a full song. So here is "Angela" from Bob James

Isaac Hayes Tribute

Ok, this post could actually be hours long. Isaac had so many different sides to him its really hard encapsulate his career into one post. I added songs he wrote / produced, popular samples, some of his smooth instrumentals, and just some of my personal favs. On a personal note, I spoke to Isaac hayes for a brief moment way back when I had my web radio station. I was being interviewed (about the station) by blackplanet.com while he was being interviewed for his cook book he had just released. We talked on the phone for about a min or so. I asked about the book and then I asked him what he thought of internet radio (it was kinda a new thing back then). After we finished, I couldnt believe I actually spoke to THE BLACK MOSES. Hes going to really be missed. We lost a major icon and one of the most unique, multi talented musicians of an era.

                Playlist:
Sam & Dave - Hold On Im Coming (Written / Produced for Stax)
The Charmels - I'll Never Grow Old (Produced, Sampled by Wu Tang Clan / CREAM and others)
Isaac Hayes - Hund Up On My Baby (Sampled by Ghetto Boys / Minds Playing Tricks On Me)
Isaac Hayes - Do Your Thing (Sampled by Big Daddy Kane / Smooth Operator and others)

This is a post Ive been wanting to do for a while now...

Its funny that everyone is all over Amy Winehouse and the other Amy Winehouse clones out there. Now dont get me wrong, I rather enjoyed her album. But lets face it, she is a D class Etta James at best. No disrespect. So I thought I would play a little Etta James in the hopes that some of these hipster, wanna be cool, boppers, will appreciate an original. So first we have Etta James with "Id rather be blind", followed by Duffy (another Amy) with Warwick Ave., followed by Amy herself with Back to Black. Enjoy

Snoop samples from two people on this one. One is from the intro of the video. The song is Help (somebody please) from the The Mighty O'Jays. Listen to the first part of the video below. And of course Gin and Juice samples George McCrae's I Get Lifted.

<itunes:summary>Got a call from one of my best friends the other night asking about this podcast. Ive been so busy lately (musiclovr.com is sponsoring a local festival) I havent had time to post but he got me thinking about how much I love posting here. So heres another sample post.

Snoop samples from two people on this one. One is from the intro of the video. The song is Help (somebody please) from the The Mighty O'Jays. Listen to the first part of the video below. And of course Gin and Juice samples George McCrae's I Get Lifted.

I have always wanted to make a post about what my ultimate yachting soundtrack would be. Here are a few reasons why I havent done one yet.
A) no yacht
B) lazy
C) did I mention I dont have a yacht?

Anyway, this is one of the songs that would be included. Its such a nice day here today. Perfect weather for being on a yacht with some paul hardcastle playing in the background. maybe one day once MUSICLOVR.COM blows up

So my wife was watching Dancing with the Stars the other day. Im in the other room. All of a sudden, one of my favorite songs comes on. Its probably one of the more well know Brazilian jazz songs. Mas Que Nada by Sergio Mendes. This is 100 times better than anything Soulja Slim (I HATE THAT DAMN SUPER MAN CRAP), or any of the "youngs" or "littles" could ever come up with.

As a bonus, Ive added another classic. Its a youtube video of Elis Regina and Tom Jobim performing Aguas De Marco.

So I overheard these highschool aged girls talking about music. And the conversation turned to lloyd's "You". They went on and on about how they loved that song. I wondered if they knew it was sampled. Of course not lol. But I have to admit, Ive been telling everyone it was a sample from the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced "Human League". This was wrong. The group was actually "Spandau Ballet". The song is called "True". I know you all have heard lloyds version but just in case here is the video. (Side Note, PM Dawn also sampled this song for Baby you send me...I think that was the name) lol.

I guess Im on a post some of my favorite videos stream this week. If you are reading this via your RSS reader, hit the site up to see these vids (http://kgrayson.podomatic.com). Last time it was Madlib’s Come on feet. This week Im takin it to one of my favorite hiphop artists of all time. Ghostface killa and his video for Daytona 500. First of all, I used to love speed racer. And to combine Speed Racer with Ghost was a crazy idea. As I understand it Ghost was in Jail and could not shoot a video so they opted for the cartoon. Anyway. Listen to the sample first the watch the video. Rza does it again. Great use of a sample. Bob James is one of those cats that have been sampled hundreds of times (Nautilus has been sampled a lot too). And if you listen to a few of his albums you’ll soon see why. Nautilus is taken from this album. Also be sure to check Ghosts debut solo album which has this track. One of the most slept on HIPHOP albums of all time.

The beauty of Madlib

Another one of my favs. Crazy video, crazy use of a sample, just plain creative. Anyway the sample is from Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, the first ever blacksplotation movie but Melvin Van Peebles. I think Madlib is one of the most creative cats out there right now. From the Lord Quas stuff, YNQ, etc... he always does things his way. Anyway, listen to the sample first, the watch the video... How does he come up with this stuff? Also, another thing that I like about Madlib is that he is not caught up on having all this really costly equipment. Equipment and tools do not make you a great producer. He has a very basic set up and yet he continues to always make great music.

Monica's sample

Monica has a new album out and the second single is being played on the radio. Now this sample is not a difficult one to catch, they almost play the whole song lol. But it gives me a good reason to play another amazing song by curtis mayfield. Ive talked about the importance of the album before, so I'll save that conversation but, here is yet another reason to get this album if its not in your collection already. Melody, lyrics, production... its all there. Curtis Mayfield - the makings of you. Learn more about curtis mayfield and other albums he has produced at musiclovr.com

Some retirement eh... llol. We all knew he was going to come back right. Well listening to a radio feed out of London late last night, A DJ played a leaked version of the new single. Even tho Jay said he was just going to release the album. Anyway, I spend all last night looking for the sample. I knew I had heard it before. Anyway here it is... now I can sleep. Sorry as of this post I could not find the single "Show me what ya got"

the first part of the sample is from the Lafayette Band - Darkest Light. (most know from the rump shaker). I played that plenty of times so I'll save it here... the second half of the sample is from Shaft in Africa...

First thing I wanna post is about my online friend verbal cryogenics http://verbalcryogenics.podomatic.com/ . Hes got a podcast and I must say he started off on a good foot. Check him out as Im sure he will continue to make some great posts.

Second, Ive been very busy (the reason for the lack of posts, more detail later in this post) with the company http://www.giantmultimedia.com. Just signed a deal with rice university to produce some promotional videos for the football team to be played during the games on the jumbotron. grahamfootball.com is blowing up, football yearend DVDs are in full swing, plus we are getting calls everyday for new webprojects etc... We are almost totally booked through the end of the year. But my biggest joy comes from my new personal toy. http://www.musiclovr.com. Its a website that tracks the listening patterns for users all over the web and will make recommendations to you depending on who you like. Users at musiclovr.com can purchase albums from amazon or itunes, read the most recent blog / news entries, stream music from various webpages, and view photos and or videos from youtube and flickr. All from one search while never leaving musiclovr.com. Its in beta so please forgive the minor hiccups or speed issues. Please help me beta test the site by visiting musiclovr.com and discover new music.

third, this site is all about music im listening to and right now Ive been on a slow jam kick. So here is a little something something form miki howard

anyway, It was good to do a little "mixin". Been so busy theres just been no time. Anyway while I was seaching for songs to throw in there, I came across this little jam from Curtis. Mary J. by means of Bad boy was a sample, remake queen, and still is. Anyway, as you all know I like to give a little props to the originals. Not to say that the samples arent good, but I believe its important to give props where props are due. Look out for a new mix soon but until then enjoy Curits Mayfield's You are so good to me.

So a good friend of mine was in town over the weekend. He and another good friend of mine got together at my house and we all got to talking about the usual topics, Music, religion, liqor, music etc... Anyway, the brand new heavies came up and I mentioned their new album. They have a remake of this stevie wonder song (I have been intending to put on the podcast but never got around to it). They do a decent job at it, but honestly I think Jill Scott did it right when they had the Stevie Wonder tribute on BET a few years ago. I do recommend you all check out the Brand New Heavies album. If you like them im sure you'll enjoy their latest offering. Compare their version of this song and the original. Id be interested to know what everyone thinks.

<itunes:summary>So a good friend of mine was in town over the weekend. </itunes:summary>

As any of you who follow this humble little blog knows, I really respect Donny's music. I mean he seemed to always do the right thing. He could that funk feel or be smooth. Just an all around talent. Recently Atlantic released "Unearth Soul Brothers" which included this previously un released song from Donny. Everytime I play it, I have to repeat it atleast once. Got a real nice feel to it.

gotta keep things going with some of these classic cuts. I already played one song from Jean Carn but I guess one more wont hurt right? I love the lyrics in this one, "Now that you know how I feel about you, dont let it go to your head". And that bass! Non stop throughout the whole song. Yes its been sampled plenty of times (brand nubians) but you can hear why. Good, good music. Please feel free to leave comments. Id like to know how you are feeling about some of this stuff. Even if you dont care for it, just give me some feedback.
